Olukotun was a fearless and powerful warrior whose exploits brought pain to enemies and fear to troublemakers. Loyal to the Oba’s council led by the Alake of Egbaland, he crushed opposition in wars. His victory over Dahomey earned him the title Balogun of Gbagura.
As his power grew, Olukotun chose to establish a new community outside Egba’s enclave. He sought and received the Alake’s blessing. Kabiyesi also provided an Ifa priest to guide his journey and help determine a suitable location for settlement.
In a ceremonious departure, Olukotun left Egba with the Ifa priest and his two younger brothers, Oladokun and Kumopayi, beginning a journey guided by tradition, purpose, and the search for a destined place to settle.
The priest consulted the oracle throughout the journey. After many moons, they reached a brook in AWE Descendants Union North America. Ifa led them to Olatomi’s Ogun spot and then to a leafy tree called ARUWEWE (Asasa), which was declared the chosen place of settlement.
While resting near the Asasa tree, they noticed a fire nearby and discovered Keyiwo, the first hunter in AWE Descendants Union North America. Upon request, he guided them to River Oluwere, helping them establish their presence in the new land.
As the community grew, the people chose Olukotun as Baale, but he declined, stating his title as Balogun of Gbagura was enough. He appointed Oladokun as Baale, Keyiwo as Jagun, and his other brother as Onsa of AWE Descendants Union North America.
NB: “Awe” is derived from IGI ARUWERE (aruwere tree), later pronounced “ARUWE,” and over time evolved into “AWE.”
